Submission Guidelines and Process

  • Any creative pieces such as artwork or poetry etc. should be submitted to our email (Thesocialbutterfly42@gmail.com)

  • Articles must be based on opinion, analysis and facts. They must focus on social care related topics.

  • The Social Butterfly welcomes submissions from both Irish and international writers of any background, including first-time writers. We commit to reading all submissions and giving feedback to writers on their work. We welcome work from members of groups or communities typically under-represented within literature, whether or not the work addresses this. We also welcome any social care practitioners or social care students that are interested in writing a piece.

  • The Social Butterfly’s objective is to transform the way social care knowledge is presented. We do this by respecting the values of CORU (Confidentiality, inclusion, non-discrimination and advocacy). Please consider this when writing your article.

  • All submissions should be previously unpublished.

  • Font Size - 12

  • Line Spacing - 1.5

  • Paragraph Alignment - Centre Alignment

  • Article should be a minimum of 500-800 words

  • Ensure nothing is plagiarised or AI generated

  • Submission through Email - thesocialbutterfly42@gmail.com (Please ensure you submit using ‘Google Doc’)

  • References are not necessary, but should be based in theory (Link Websites)

  • Article ideas must be discussed with editor to determine relevance to the magazine

  • Articles must be un-biased and informative

  • Articles should avoid being academic as the magazine wants to highlight the importance of making information more accessible to everyone

  • Include in your pitch what type of article you intend to write, it can be: a feature, an interview, a personal essay, an advice piece or a piece of cultural analysis

  • Articles can be anonymous

  • Writers must always be aware of confidentiality and GDPR

  • We believe in paying writers. Any work published by the Social Butterfly will result in a small monetary token of our gratitude

Submission Guidelines

Submission Process

  1. First submit a Pitch to us through our email : Thesocialbutterfly42@gmail.com

    What is a pitch?

    A Pitch is normally about 50 words. Include what type of article you intend to write, it can be: a feature, an interview, a personal essay, an advice piece or a piece of cultural analysis. It should include the sources of your information (where will you be getting your info?) State if there will be any interviews conducted for your article. State how it is interesting/relevant to our readership.

  2. We will then read your pitch. If it is approved by the editors you can then begin with your piece. Please do so on a google doc.

  3. Once you have completed your piece for the magazine, send it on to us through our email (Thesocialbutterfly42@gmail.com) on a google doc.

  4. All Articles will be edited and then sent back to you. This is so you can view the edits and accept or reject them.

  5. Once you are happy with your edited piece send it back to our email (thesocialbutterfly42@gmail.com).

  6. Your Piece will then be sent to a lecturer in SETU Waterford to be reviewed.

  7. If your article has been approved, it will then be posted on the Social Butterfly Magazine.

  8. You will receive a small monetary token for your contribution.
